What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file that is sent to the user’s browser and stored on their device (computer, phone, tablet, etc.). There are different types of cookies, depending on who manages them (first-party or third-party), their duration (persistent or session-based) or their purpose (technical, for analytics, personalisation, media player, etc.).

What types of cookies are there?

Cookies, depending on the entity that manages them:

  • First-party cookies: managed by the domain that the user accesses and from which they request a specific service (in this case, the domains owned by the website). .
  • Third-party cookies: sent to the user’s device from a domain or server other than the one being accessed.

Cookies, depending on their purpose:

  • Technical cookie: these enable users to navigate a website, platform or application and to use the various options or services available on it, including those used by the publisher to manage and operate the website and to enable its functions and services. For example, monitoring traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted areas, detecting fraud related to service security, processing registration or event participation requests, using security features whilst browsing, storing content for the streaming of videos or audio, enabling dynamic content (such as loading animations for text or images), or sharing content via social media.
  • Preference or personalisation cookies: these enable the system to remember information so that the user can access the service with specific settings (for example, the language).
  • Analytics or measurement cookies: this type of cookie is used to measure activity on websites, apps or platforms, with the aim of making improvements based on an analysis of how users interact with the service.
  • Behavioural advertising cookies: these store information about user behaviour obtained through the continuous monitoring of their browsing habits, enabling the creation of a specific profile for the purpose of displaying advertising.

Cookies classified by how long they remain active:

  • Session cookies: these will be deleted once the user leaves the website that created them.
  • Persistent cookies: the data remains stored on the device and can be accessed and processed for a period determined by the data controller.

What kind of cookies do we use?

  • First-party cookies: These are cookies sent to the User’s device from a server or domain managed by the Data Controller, from which the service requested by the User is provided.
  • Functional cookies: These are the cookies necessary for the website to function properly.
  • Third-party cookies: These are cookies sent to the user’s device from a server or domain that is not managed by the Data Controller, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
