The streets of Guadalajara are steeped in legends and anecdotes that have captured the public imagination and passed down the city’s legendary history from one generation to the next.
Among the best-known stories are the recapture of Guadalajara by Álvar Fáñez on a starry night in San Juan, the classical myth of Atalanta and Hippomenes depicted in one of the rooms of the Infantado Palace, and the popular alley known as ‘Abrazamozas’, whose winding passages have inspired countless tales of courtship and secret trysts.
This route takes in some of the most iconic settings from these tales, ranging from the tragic legend of the lovers of Alamín—a symbol of the impossible love between the Arab and Christian worlds—to the mysterious dragon frescoes in the Church of San Francisco and the historic Calle La Carrera, which was used in the Middle Ages as a venue for knightly training and a place to welcome kings.
