10th Century bridge over the river Henares

This bridge over the river Henares is one of the few examples of 10th century Arab engineering.

It was crucial to defend and easily group together the disperse population, and later, for the defense of the medina. There was a defensive tower in the centre of the bridge, over 20 metres high. This disappeared in the 18th century battered by a succession of floods. The central arches of the bridge were rebuilt out of stone on the orders of Charles III, as is recorded in a commemorative stone plinth.
